about

Hauru is my long-awaited daughter of Jim. She’s a dog to catch stars with, making dream after dream come true. At first, I was startled by how different she was from her father, but she turned out to be exactly the dog I wanted, and needed. Over time, I completely fell for her, and now I can’t even remember what life was like without my little companion. She has grown into an amazing dog — a turbocharged version of her father, Jim 2.0. 😊 She is incredibly determined, confident, and focused on achieving her goals. She’s very fast, loves to run, has never lacked motivation. She inherited her father’s athleticism and fantastic physical possibilities.

Sports and work: I love introducing each of my dogs to various activities, and Hauru was no exception. Her main sports are herding and dogfrisbee, but she has also tried agility, obedience, IGP defense, basics of tracking, and bikejoring. She loves working for the sake of working and is incredibly motivated by toys. She’ll tug like a shark, with anything, anywhere, anytime. Unlike toys, food has never been her passion. She’ll work for it without issue but isn’t the biggest fan.

Hauru is a rather powerful, mentally strong dog. She doesn’t get discouraged or give up on work due to pressure from her handler, animals, or a decoy in IGP defense. She’s brave and confident, excelling with stubborn sheep that try to intimidate her. She was never afraid to stand her ground, and with a cool head, she gains control over the animals. She progresses quickly in herding, she loves it. Working with her is very pleasurable, even if she’s quite a challenging dog for a new handler, due to her high speed, quick reactions, being always one step ahead of me 😉 She naturally likes driving the sheep and prefers it over flanking.

In frisbee, she inherited her father’s excellent and safe jumping technique. She retrieves quickly and enjoys it — it came naturally to her, requiring no training. She tracks the disc’s flight well, effectively chases fast throws, and doesn’t jump too early — she can miscalculate in strong wind but quickly learns from it. Hauru learns fast and is determined in everything she does, which has its pros and cons. Without consistency, she’s equally persistent in developing “naughty” behaviors as she is in her work. She’s very responsive to body language and notices even the slightest movement in herding or agility, so I had to learn to always align my physical cues with verbal commands. She has no issues working with strangers, even competing in frisbee with people she met once in her life. Her quality of work doesn’t suffer without me by her side — she’s just as fast, motivated, and focused.

Everyday life: Living with Hauru is a joy. She’s wild when it’s time to be, but she knows how to calm down when needed. From a young age, she traveled with me on both short and long trips. She’s never had issues with long car rides (at two months old, she handled a 12-hour-long journey from her breeder to my home without problems) or with new environments. She feels at home everywhere. She’s stayed with me in hotels, camping cabins, tents, slept in car trunks, and friends’ houses — none of it made a big impression her. She curls up, snuggles, and sleeps peacefully like always. She’s a big cuddle bug, seizing every opportunity to ask for pets or surprise someone with a lick to the face at the least expected moment — unless there are sheep around, then she’s all work 😉 She generally ignores strangers but becomes friendly and affectionate after calm introductions. Crowds don’t bother her — I’ve taken her to busy places for socialisation, and she ignores people like there is noone around.

She’s friendly with other dogs but usually keeps her distance, ignoring them. On walks, she’s not the clingy type — she ranges about 10-50 meters away but keeps an eye on me and responds immediately when called. She has a strong need to run, using it to process emotions and decompress. If she doesn’t get enough off-leash running time, she’s more emotional in daily life.

Growing up: Although she’s grown into a bold and confident dog, she went through phases of increased fearfulness during adolescence. She barked at people in the dark, or those who appeared suddenly on forest paths. Most of these behaviors resolved on their own as she matured, though some required a bit of training. Despite this, she has always been friendly — after barking, she’d quickly warm up to people, and her uncertainty would vanish. She’s always been affectionate with familiar people, eager to cuddle and give kisses.

As a puppy, she went through a phase of staring at moving objects like cars or bikes, but it never escalated into chasing attempts and was resolved quickly after a few corrections. Beyond that, she caused no issues. She was house-trained quickly, slept through the night without needing potty breaks, and naturally learned to rest in her crate. She never protested being crated and often chooses it for rest on her own. She had no problems calming down at home or being left alone for a few hours. The only things she ever destroyed were minor, like a dish sponge or an interesting leaf from a houseplant but she never tried to damage furniture.
