..:: about ::..

Jimmy is my first sport dog, a dog who showed me that sky is not the limit. We’ve done great things together and there are even more ahead of us. He is my once-in-a-lifetime dog, my shadow, my soulmate.

This chocolate fella opened the door to a world of dog sports so wide that I believe they’ll never close. He is my first working dog and while raising him I’ve made a lot of mistakes, I’ve tried a lot of different sports, different training approaches etc. Nevertheless he is an amazing border collie and he is full of forgiveness for my mistakes;) We’ve tried a bit of everything: agility, flyball, bikejoring, tracking, defense, obedience but dogfrisbee, and sheep herding is what we love the most. Two activities which are so different, yet I like them both so much. I love seeing Jim thriving in every sport he tries.

Were I to describe Jimmy in one sentence, I would say peace and love. He likes every creature in this world but there is me above it all and him only having eyes for me, carefully listening to every word, always ready to do anything no matter if it will be sleeping and hugging all day or an exhausting work. He is really kind, patient, friendly to strangers. He’s not getting excited about other people (except my boyfriend, they love each other to bits), but he’s very social, it is hard not to like him! He loves cuddles, was never reluctant for the human touch. To other dogs he is either friendly or is just ignoring them, avoiding contact. He is communicating with them really well, uses a full range of communication signals, he’s very patient, he is usually trying to calm down the unfriendly dog, walk away and stay out of the conflict. Among my friends group he is the dog that we pick for puppy socialisation, I also take him for walks with fearful, reactive or aggressive dogs and he is a wonderful dog-professor. He is not a fan of all the other males, but he is not making conflict, just walks away and sends a lot of signals that he doesn’t want contact and that’s it. If the other dog that is the same size or smaller than Jim will be really intrusive, ignoring Jimmy’s communicates, starting a conflict, Jimmy will not back out and correct the other dog. He adjust his behaviour and style of playing to the other dog, he is more gentle with puppies, elderly or anxious dogs, and more crazy with dogs of his size and energy level. He fully respects other dogs and his communication is very clear.

His on/off switch is great. We live in a big city, I often take him for a walk to a city center, it is not a problem for him to ride a train or bus, to sleep under the table in the restaurat etc. While on competitions, he is fully focused when we are competing, between our starts he is sleeping in or near our tent, often without a leash. He is so calm and just not interested in strangers. During our adventures we’ve slept in different hotels, under a tent, even in a car trunk – all without any problems. He just turns himself into a fluffy, sleepy ball and is off to the world of dreams. He’ll sleep with me no matter if we’re gonna wake up at 5 AM or at noon… That’s a great thing when it comes to weekends or when I’m sick. Even weeks of not doing anything besides quick walks for his needs or going out to the garden are not a problem for him – he will be more energetic, responsive, reactive but definitely not a type that will destroy anything in boredom. In general he is brave, confident and not very sensitive to sounds of the city, has no reaction to shot but there is one thing that makes him feel uneasy – walls of a tent that are loudly fluttering on wind. It can scare him and he will try to avoid walking past it but after a quick encouragement he will continue the walk or working next to it.

Working with Jimmy is a pure pleasure. He has a nice drive, uses his brain at work (first thinks, then does, thankfully;)) and is greatly motivated for toys, food and social reward. He has a very positive attitude, wagging his tail, he’s just happy to be around and have fun with me. While working, he stays calm, he controls his emotions, doesn’t get overly excited. When he waits for my command he stands still and waits, doesn’t do whatever he wants. In his great happiness he sometimes loses precision and does some silly things (like tap-dancing in obedience in a square-send instead of standing still;), not a type of an always serious collie-perfectionist. He’s got a great will-to-please and nothing can distract him while working. He reads my emotions very well. When he feels I’m upset or irritated he starts to try to fix it and does a lot of silly things but never gives up working. When my frustration goes on for a longer time, he will get unsure, kind of sad but after seeing I’m happy again he quickly goes back to his usual energy.

Dogfrisbee is our main sport. Jim has a great, natural jumping technique. He jumps very high with a great style (even when it comes to distance throws!) and he lands well. On freestyle competitions his athlecism was always marked really, really high, even for 2.5/2.5 possible points. Always gaining bonus points for mid-air catch in distance games, whenever it’s possible. He naturally tracks the flight of a disc, he very nicely cushions the landing, he never crashed because of his own wrong decision. He adjusts speed and waits for the disc, has a very high execution in distance and freestyle even in tough conditions or with bad throws. He sometimes jumps too early and misses the catch if he had a break from regular trainings but it’s something that is easy to manage with him. He is fast while running to the disc and catches even the hardest throws, not that fast while coming back though. He had a natural retrieve since he was a puppy but I never trained him to be faster and because of my lack of experience we made some bad retrieval habits but I’m too lazy to work on this detail now:) Jimmy is great in this sport, I couldn’t wish for a better dog! His potential and physical possibilities are outstanding and he definitely passes them to his children.

In herding he shows his instinct, he’s really nice to work with. I need to remind him not to get too fast, but he listens to me and is stable, easy to control. He makes progress quickly and I’m the one who needs to learn more here. He has nice, wide natural flanks and naturally tries to bring the sheep back to me. Sometimes he is not pushy enough, doesn’t naturally block the sheep if they’re running away. Drive away is something that is not easy for him and he didn’t really understand driving sheep in the opposite direction than I am for a very long time. He is often praised by different trainers for his stable, great temperament. He takes pressure from the handler very nicely, reacts to it and draws conclusions but doesn’t get overwhelmed easily. He sometimes lacks independence and looks back at me as if he wanted to ask “What now?” or “Am I doing good?”, hard to say if it’s a result of years of training other sports that require a lot of handler-dog contact before we started with sheep, or a natural thing that he lacks because of his not pure working line pedigree.
He tried herding cattle once – he saw the animals and was pushing them nicely, he didn’t freak out because of the size of these animals and he was really easy to control, although there were moments when he wasn’t able to push the cows further and required help from another dog, he is also not that strong minded to bite the cattle to get them moving.

In 2024 we (finally!) started obedience trainings. We managed to pass PT-1 exam and PT-2 only a week after that. Jimmy is a focused, motivated dog with huge will to please. Quick learner, good drive, he loves it. Nicely changes between dynamic and static, nicely works for a social reward and for a postponed one. He doesn’t get frustrated about doing a lot of same repetitions while rewarded in between but he sometimes frustrates if it goes wrong again and again. He gets a bit less engaged and precise while going without success and reward for a long time, my opinion really matters to him.

I like to show him diverse activities, so we’ve tried a bit of flyball, agility, IGP, bikejoring… He nicely finds himself in each of these sports, but we are not able to train them so often to see his full potential and compete. We were training flyball in Synergy Flyball Team for almost a year, Jim showed himself as a fast, motivated and focused dog – unfortunately never took part in competitions. He hasn’t got any problems with working in usual flyball noise, with dogs running just next to him or so on. Jimmy and I also know the basics of agility, but I don’t think we will ever compete in agility for serious due to my clumsiness ๐Ÿ˜‰ and prioritising other sports. His full sister runs in A3, dad in A2, dad’s sister in A3, many of his half siblings also train and compete in this sport.

He also adores running. He goes crazy when I get my bike and go bikejoring with him and yet in this sort of madness he still listens to every command – stop, turn, slow down etc. He is fast, he stood on podium of Top Speed Dog not once reaching the speed of over 45km/h.
